Applying for a Credit Card
Applying for a credit card is a simple procedure but still it involves some paperwork and most likely you will be required to present a whole bunch of documents before the issuer decides that you are trustworthy and can be given a credit card. The application procedure has been incredibly simplified thanks to the Internet and although now you can apply for a credit card without leaving the comfort of your home, you still might need to spend an hour or two filling the required forms. But if you have spent days doing your homework – i.e. researching for what types of credit cards are available and which is best for you, these hour or two are nothing. Before you apply for a credit card, you must do some research. If you have never had a credit card, getting familiar with how the system works in general is strongly recommendable. If you have had a credit card or have borrowed money in other ways, you already have credit report. If you have not seen your credit report, this is a good occasion to do it. In any case, you need to know your credit score. Your credit score is very important because if it is poor, you will get rejected for those cards, for which only perfect credit is allowed. When you search for the right type of credit card, you must always consider if you are eligible for it. If the requirements of the issuer are strict and you don't meet them, there is no point to apply. Although generally credit card issuers are not discriminative against applicants, who have been rejected in the past, applying when you know that you don't meet the requirements is stupid. After you have found the cards that are good for you, you go to the site of the issuer and fill in the form, or if the application has been mailed to you, you fill it in and mail it back. Although there is much discussion about the safety of online transactions, the sites of most issuers use secure technologies, so submitting your application online is not risky. Even if you mail it, there is no guarantee that unauthorized people will not get it and misuse your personal data. Application forms are vary widely but generally credit card issuers ask you about your driver's license number, your social security number, date of birth, address, income, etc. Besides the information you give them, they will get on their own additional information about you. For instance, they will check your credit report. No matter how you file your credit card application – online or via mail, you should always keep a copy of the application for yourself. This will help you keep track of your application process and if the issuer contacts you requesting additional information, you just have to look at what you have written and tell them the additional information they need to know. When you apply for a credit card, you can do it with many issuers at the same time, though it is best to apply for no more than 3 or 4 credit cards. After you submit your application form, you might have to wait some time till you get an answer. While many issuers offer instant approval (or denial), others are not that fast and the procedure could take weeks. One of the easiest way to apply for a credit card are the specialized sites that offer credit cards from many issuers. Such sites are helpful because you can compare at a glance several different credit cards and see which one you like most. In many cases those sites also offer online application for free, so you have everything you need to apply for a new credit card and can do it quickly and without much hassle.
